This event was ordered by Claudius II.

But a priest, named Valentin, contrary to this prohibition, was secretly marrying couples to safeguard the sacrament of marriage. In the end, he was sentenced to death on February 14 and as a result, this day was named Valentine's Day in his honor.

The first signs of commercialization of this celebration were in 1840 by an American, Esther A. Howland, who designed romantic gift cards with drawings of lovers. To her astonishment, they were a huge success, even though they they were only worth a few cents.
